Winter is a season where many plants turn dormant, readying their energy for spring blooms; while others come to life, bringing much needed colour and vibrancy.

Why composting is traditionally harder in winter

Composting – the decay and recycling of organic matter – is dependent on temperature. The colder the environment, the slower the process.

Most composting systems are not designed with temperature control in mind. Heat from the composting process escapes quickly and easily through most bin systems, as well as during the aeration process of manual mixing.

Temperature matters

• Composting is slowest in the cold below 15C
• At room temperature it remains slow, but viable.
• Speedier composting occurs when the temperature rises above 30C.

To keep temperatures above 30C, especially in cold weather, depends on your composting method:

• Hot heap method is the classic example of hot composting with a large waste pile. In winter, a larger pile provides more materials to surround and insulate its hot core. The temperature is maintained by turning the pile every few days – a lot of hard work!
• Traditional compost bins and tumblers are available in a range of sizes. The smaller ones rarely stay warm for long while the bigger ones are challenging to keep aerated and warm because of the need for manual mixing. It’s near impossible to manage the temperature properly and the systems typically lose heat quickly in cold weather due to a lack of insulation.
